About the Movie

The Mountain of Gods

Malayalam Feature Film  I  India  I  Duration: 111 Minutes

Synopsis

"Daivathaankunnu" (The mountain of Gods ) draws its life from a legend that has been famous in Kerala for centuries. While the film speaks through the fantasy of Mabali Thampan (God of Tribals), it clearly distinguishes between reality and fiction. Beyond portraying the tribal communities spread across Kerala in celestial terms, "Daivathaankunnu" also addresses the crucial question of how much their heritage and culture should be protected.
The film attempts to accurately depict the heritage values of the tribal community through the heartfelt relationship and communication between four children and Mabali Thampan, the local deity. However,  the boundaries between belief and disbelief are very thin; fantasy and reality stand face to face. At its core, the film also speaks about love that rises above all differences. Mabali Thampan reminds us that what needs to be protected must be protected at any cost.
This film serves as a powerful medium to raise awareness about the plight of tribal communities in India. Historically, these communities have faced exploitation, displacement, and marginalization. Even in modern times, they continue to struggle for their rights, land, and cultural preservation.

Director’s Note

This 111 minutes feature film was shot on digital format (4K) and is in Cinemascope. The story focuses on the life of tribal villagers. The scenic beauty of forests, meadows and caves can be seen at its best view in the film.
The camera has poetic charm. Essentially this film is about the life of tribals who live in forests, their beliefs, in myth and their knowledge about rarest natural medicines and how sacred it is for them and how it benefits the whole world, if it is preserved.
